Get Ready for Art All Night
Lawrenceville’s free art marathon returns for its 10th anniversary
LAWRENCEVILLE – It’s baaaaack! That’s right, the 10th Annual Art
All Night returns to Lawrenceville for another art marathon and community celebration.
Artists and art lovers should mark their calendars for Saturday,
April 28 and Sunday, April 29. The Catalyst Building, a former schoolhouse at 141 41st Street, will serve as this year’s venue.
Professional and amateur artists of all ages are invited to
display and sell their work at this community event that’s like no other. Artists can bring one piece of art to the registration
table at The Catalyst Building between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 28. Artists will be asked to show an ID to drop off and pick up artwork.
Admission is FREE and the event is open to the public from 5 p.m.
(April 28) through 2 p.m. (April 29).
Art All Night, one of Pittsburgh's most popular arts events, has gained a cult-like following since
its inception a decade ago. Last year, Art All Night featured work by 883 artists and was attended by
over 10,000 guests.
“Ten years ago, a group of Lawrenceville residents got together to
brainstorm an event,” recalls Chris Hollingshead, who is spearheading the 2007 Art All Night. “This event would celebrate
our neighborhood and be something different.”
And so, Art All Night was born, and something different indeed it
became. “We don’t judge it, or censor it, or charge a fee for
it. To do so would violate its essence and scare it away,” says
Hollingshead about the art event. “You can’t judge a piece of
someone’s soul. You can’t censor a piece of who they are. And,
you can’t charge them a fee to share it with us.”
No wonder Art All Night has grown each year. “But not because of
us,” says Hollingshead. “But because the market for something so
real is so big.”
Hollingshead recalls the first Art All Night: “We got a space and
we built it out to show art. We invited people to come. We figured if
no one came, at least we were going to have a great party. Something
amazing happened. People came. Lots of people. Not only did they
come, but they brought expressions of themselves to show and share.
We all saw it. There was something very special. The inner spirit
that lives in us all, came out from behind its walls, dropped its
pretensions, and quietly exposed itself, for all to see.”
Art All Night is planned and coordinated by an all-volunteer
organizing committee comprised of residents and supporters of
Pittsburgh’s vibrant Lawrenceville neighborhood. Dozens of
additional volunteers help in the final stages to prepare the venue,
construct exhibit panels, assist with registration, hang artwork and
much, much more.
